Time To Party

May 23rd 2008 02:30
By Sarah Dunstone.

5th of April, teenagers were running around in Martin Place, Sydney. Bands were warming up on stage and any minute network Ten’s video hits would start showing the start of nation youth’s week to all of Australia.

As the first day of youth week began the feeling was astonishing. Nerves could be felt in the air as you walked past the tents. The saying ‘you could cut the tension with a knife’ was definitely the right one for this atmosphere.

This year like many was a great success, which pleased Beyondblue immensely. In 2008 Beyondblue got involved with the event promoting awareness for depression among the youth of Australia.

Conducing the ‘write it’ section, Beyondblue put the challenge out for young write to complete a piece of writing which used the themes of, looking for depression, listening to your friends experiences, talk about what’s going on and seek help.

Walking into a huge white tent, the sounds of laughter and chatter could be heard as I made my way to the competitions head quarters. No mistake could be made, Jeff Kennett, the head of Beyondblue, was sitting in the middle of the sign up table the light glimmering from his face. His excitement couldn’t be held in as I sat down next to him to talk about Beyondblue’s involvement in this year’s youth week.

“To be in something like youth week is so important to us at Beyondblue. There will be thousands of kids involved with the numerous amounts of activities and competitions so it’ll be the perfect way to get the word out about depression and mental illness while they are doing something they enjoy.” By the way Jeff spoke these words I could tell how much his heart was in to helping those children that thought they had nowhere to go. “Every child should be able to tell people what’s going on in their life and one way to get this message across is to get children talking to other children. People will talk to their friends before they tell their parents.”

Why youth week was one question one my mind, why not just go to schools or youth centres or get celebrities involved to spread the message? “It’s a fact most children don’t want to be at school and when they do it’s never for the type of work they’re doing, it’ll be for friends or something like that. Youth centres are an old idea, same with celebrities, we needed something new. Youth week was coming up and seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

The vibe was definitely there. Smiling faces were everywhere to be seen and as the day slowed down the energy continued. The message Beyondblue had wanted people to see and recognize had certainly reached the people who were at Martin Place. As the crowds piled out the gates tired and weary you could see the difference youth week makes on people. Along with those people were memories of a glorious day.
