The Rising Road Toll

May 30th 2008 02:49
By Corey Gallichan.

The road toll is getting worse and worse. There are too many people, mainly p-platers, dying on our roads. The government have made campaigns, such as television advertisements to tell people to slow down, but the message doesn’t seem to be getting across. There are still hoons on our roads and there needs to be more serious consequences for them, because they just keep speeding and risking other peoples’ lives. In 2006-2007, there were 329 people killed and in 2007-2008, there were 330 people killed on the roads. This shows how many people die just from the driving on the road. These statistics are shocking and there needs to be action with hoons and drink-drivers on the roads. Young p-platers think it is funny to speed on our roads when really; it’s a death sentence to other drivers.

So many families lose their family members due to the idiots on the road. I believe the new TAC advertisement on television is great. It shows families that have lost their children or other family members due to the road toll. The message that TAC are trying to get across is, look what families go through when their family members die. The families are shown crying which shows how much pain they are going through once their family members die. During the 12 months between January 2007 and January 2008, there were a total of 1,598 deaths, which was a 1.5% increase from January 2006 to January 2007.

Movies such as The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift are influences on drag racing in our streets. Young drivers who have not a lot of driving experience are the main ones dragging down roads and causing accidents. TAC’s road safety general manager, David Healy said, “Films like this primarily target young males, who because of their lack of driving experience and general propensity to take risks, already have an increased chance of crashing." These movies are huge influences, because in the movies the people drag down streets and it looks cool and fun. Then these young drivers get out there and drag in the streets and risk their own lives and other people’s lives. "It makes it difficult for road safety agencies to improve the behaviors of young drivers when such contradictory entertainment is being heavily promoted to them," Healy said. But Clinton Joyce of Toyo Tyres, which has sponsored drift racing for 3 years, said he thought the movie would encourage people to try drift racing properly, on designated tracks. “We are completely against draft racing on the road, that’s why we sponsor organised events,” he said. Drag racing in streets is a thing that should be stopped because there are a lot of accidents from people drag racing.

This national Easter road toll this year encountered 23 deaths, four less than last year, which is a good sign for the future. New South Wales have had the safest Easter since 1949, but the high amount of deaths in Western Australia and Queensland have thrown the spotlight onto the scourges of drink-driving and speeding. While Queensland and Western Australia topped the amount of deaths, six and seven respectively, Australia’s most populous state recorded its fatality-free Easter in almost six decades. New South Wales Police Minister David Campbell praised New South Wales drivers and police for keeping the state fatality-free from midnight March 19 until midnight on Monday. "That's the first time since 1949, since road statistics have been kept, and we've had a population that has doubled and there are 13 times more cars on the road since that time so ... it is a good result," Mr Campbell said. This is a great effort and the rest of Australia should try and match it next year. "I offer my congratulations and thanks to drivers of NSW and the police of NSW for a strong effort over the weekend with no deaths on NSW roads," he said. The Easter road toll has dropped this year which is good, but there are still a lot of idiots on the road thinking they are cool by speeding and drink-driving, who will continue to kill themselves and others. The road toll needs to lower, because there are too many people dying at a young age and too many families going through hell for the rest of their lives.

Great piece.

I think you overused statistics a little,

but it's good. You just need to involve the audince more.
