The Life Of Lloyd Bakiele

BY Jordy OBrien
Lloyd Bakiele grew up in the nation of Malawi, which is known as a third world country, very poor and very underveloped. Malawi is located in Southeast Africa. Like most of the third world, Malawi has poor access to medical treatment and insufficient school education. Not a very satisfying enviroment for a new born baby to be in but Lloyd had little choice though.
Lloyd’s family were farmers but due to drought that has being occuring for two straight years. I t has left them with no crops and now they have no food and money. Not long after Lloyd was born, his mother became very ill and was not able to work. Lloyd’s only option was to go to the local dam and fetch some dirty water when he was just five. While his mum could do nothing because she was sick and couldn’t afford the medical treatment she needed. Lloyd couldn’t go to school because he had no money, so he stayed at home all day collecting more dirty water from the local dam.
Lloyd, was now nine, with his mum passed away when he was seven. He did not know that this was all about to change. My family sponsered Lloyd for only $30 a month and his life was getting back on track. Lloyd could now afford to get clean water and buy healthier and more regular food. My family and I came to the descision to sponser Lloyd because we saw those ads on the t.v of starving children. We thought that if we were starving like those poor children across the world, wouldn’t we want someone to sponser us.
He was also getting an education at the local school, learning a variety of subjects.
Lloyd is now healthier than ever at fifteen years of age, he has just completed grade 5 and is loving school. Lloyd would also like to become a doctor and help his community. His favourite subject is math and he also has a best friend. His friend has also been lucky enough to be sponsored. But unlike Lloyd, many children didn’t get sponsered and are still suffering from poverty.
Malawi is one of the driest lands on earth, with droughts every year. The water supply is totally inadequate with very little access to clean drinking water. It’s harder to grow crops and food supplies. The Malawi government has not enough money to rebuild schools, hospitals and communities. Give a donation to the organisations that help rebuild nations of the third world.
There are plenty of organisations to raise money for the people of these countries. World Vision has many fundraisers like the 40 hour famine, but these organisations are nothing without your help. You can sponser a child for just $30 a month or help set up fundraisers or just donate regularly to the organisations that help try and put away poverty. This problem is just too big for only a few to help. We need the richer nations to assist the third world countries to lead a healthier way of life.
