Our Dangerous Roads

I am outraged that the overall Australian road toll over the Easter holiday period reached twenty-three. Although this is four less then the same period last year I am extremely disappointed. Why is it that so many people are dying on Australian roads? I am even more interested in why so many deaths occur during the Easter holiday period? It angers me that people aren’t thinking and taking responsibility for their actions behind the wheel. Instead of driving for yourself you must drive for everyone on the road. If you speed, if you drink and drive, or if you don’t pay attention to your driving, you should realise that you are endangering not only yourself, not only the passengers in your car but everyone on then road around you! If you are unable to understand this simple conclusion then I don’t get why you received your licence in the first place! However, I believe not all deaths during the last Easter period were entirely to the fault of drivers, the degradation of rural Australia’s roads is absolutely appalling! It makes me ashamed when I see the European autobarns and autostradas. There long flat curved highways. Have high walls and are safe for driver to travel at high speeds. Australian roads have sharp sudden bends with large trees on either side; you can never safe passing a truck on an Australian road. Last year one hundred and seventy-four people died on rural Victorian roads. I really hope the new Rudd government gives special attention to Victoria’s provincial roads and highways, I have confidence saying they need it badly.
