Homeless In Our City
May 30th 2008 02:30
Dear Editor:
I may be only 15 and still in high school, but I know when people are being treated unfairly.
I have witnessed homeless people taking refuge in the play equipment at Lake Pertobe. Have the Warrnambool City Council simply overlooked this, or don’t any of them have a conscience?
How can we call this a safe and compassionate community, if those most in need go uncared for and are shoved aside, so they will remain unseen? Well, I do see them, their need for basic assistance and their cries for help.
Are we embarrassed of the homeless issue and of those who suffer? Or think they’re tarnished, dirty and dangerous? Indeed, a few may just emit some of those symptoms, but most dispossessed people are just looking for a helping hand.
If the Brumby government can splash out $45 million for the South West Rescue helicopter, then surely he has sufficient funds to help innocent people off the streets and help them get their lives back on track.
There are many avenues that we could go down, like public housing. But we as a community need to alter our opinion of the homeless. All the government funding in the world won’t fully fix this problem, if we don’t lend a helping hand.
