Depression Epidemic

Dear Editor,
According to statistics “Up to 2.5 % of children in the United States suffer from depression.”
Bullying in schools easily leads to depression and can also sometimes lead to suicide.
This is a huge matter and I don’t think schools, especially the teachers, are taking time to stop this issue
To make matters worse the people that are bullying are maybe having detention or timed out. This punishment isn’t nearly severe enough, and if not stopped now, they will think that it is alright to do things like this in the future and think they will hardly get in any trouble for it.
“Nearly 60 percent of boys who researchers classified as bullies in grade six through to nine were convicted of at least one crime by the age of 24. Continuing, 40 percent of them had three or more convictions by age 24.” This is disgusting. This shows that if not stopped early in their childhood they will continue to do the wrong things.
“A horrific seventeen percent of high school girls have been abused physically, whilst twelve percent of high school girls have been abused sexually. I think these numbers are so high because the case of bullying is not being stopped from an earlier age. Researches say “That many teen girls that have had abuse have been encouraged by the abuser to see themselves as bad or dirty, or to blame for the abuse, and, not surprisingly, this had a lasting impact on their self esteem and often on their adult relationships. Some also developed alcohol or psychiatric problems as a consequence of the abuse.”
I remember when I was in primary school we used to get asked who bullied us in the class, if three people say the same persons name, they would get in trouble. This is poor, what if this person was picking on this one student all the time? Would they get away with it because they hadn’t picked on three different students? Instead all students that have been accused as a bullied should be talked to and punished.
Students encouraging bullying are just as bad as the people involved because when they see it happening they will not tell the kids to stop, they will egg it on, I think this is from seeing it on T.V and movies. Experts report “66% of children (ages 10 to 16) surveyed say that their peers are influenced by TV shows” Also “Television alone is responsible for 10% of youth violence.”
“Suicide was the third leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 24 in 2002.” This figure is enormous and can all start from one boy or girl who thinks its okay to bully.
We need greater consequences for bullies, bigger punishments in school to try and get rid of the fighting and violence that can lead kids to grief, depression, or even death!
