Battle Of The Binge- The Pressures of Under Age Drinking.
May 30th 2008 02:20
Every weekend thousands of teenagers across Australia are binge drinking. They go out partying in clubs and bars until the early hours of the morning. Teenagers binge drink to gain popularity and to improve their confidence. Often the teenagers that are binge drinking are under the legal age and without parental consent. Binge drinking is especially noticeable on days of celebration such as Australia Day, New Years Eve and birthdays.
Excessive binge drinking is extremely harmful to undeveloped teenage bodies. Alcohol consumption can cause you to become intoxicated, dizzy, relax and become more susceptible to serious injury. It has many short term effects. These include; vomiting, headaches, nausea, hangovers and memory loss. The fact that ten percent of youths binge drink every week is a cause for concern. Teens often do not realise the effects that binge drinking has on their bodies in the long run. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can cause brain damage, heart damage, liver damage and increase your chances of getting throat and mouth cancer.
Every year more teenagers die from the effects of alcohol than any other drug. Binge drinking during your teen years can cause you to become dependent on alcohol. Becoming an alcoholic can be socially, physically and financially draining. Alcohol can cause relationships between family and friends to break down. The cost of many types of alcohol is not cheap. It can vary from three dollars for a can of beer to forty dollars for a bottle of spirits. The popular drink of choice among teenagers is cruisers (or alco-pops). The government has recognised the need to raise the price of cruisers by one dollar to curb the amount teenagers are spending on alcohol. The Australian government has contributed fifty-three million dollars towards solving the binge
drinking crisis.
A report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that Australia ranks ninth in the world for beer consumption among developed countries. Mr Seaton from the AIHW said that on average ten Australian’s die every day from alcohol related causes. Mr Seaton states that, "we drink to intoxication more often and it's intoxication not dependence that is our real problem." He is stating on the issue of alcohol consumption amongst teens. We have massive problems with binge drinking in Australia and we have the statistics to prove it.
